3) PhD studentship - To explore how methodologies from health economics can be used to aid the design of public health interventions and to forecast their cost-effectiveness.
Background to the Project

It is commonly recognised that the UK, in common with many other developed countries, is experiencing a so-called epidemic of public health problems related to such issues as obesity, alcohol abuse, and the impact of increasingly sedentary lifestyles in young people. To address these issues the UK government has spent many millions of pounds funding interventions that seek to overcome these problems.

Objectives and Suggested Methodologies:

This PhD project firstly aims to undertake work that will use methodologies such as discrete choice experiments to find out what the aims and objectives of public health practitioners are when designing public health interventions. Secondly, to survey members of the public to assess what the attributes are of an intervention that would maximise public participation and compliance and hence ensure the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of potential public health interventions. In addition we would like to use econometric techniques to explore the use of secondary data sources to investigate and to be able to forecast the key variables that affect overall cost-effectiveness.

Funding Notes:

A full award covers tuition fees at the UK/EU rate and annual stipend of £13,590 (2012/13). Non-EU citizen will be considered but the award only covers the tuition fees at the UK/EU rate and an annual stipend of £13,590 (2012/13).
