This PhD scholarship forms part of a new, multidisciplinary cluster of PhD scholarships across Strathclyde Business School focused on health and well-being, particularly in urban settings. This cluster is supported by and will be linked with the Centre for Health Policy, and is aligned with the University themes of Health and of Future Cities, which is a major focus for Strathclyde as a leading international technological university. The cluster will help SBS to contribute to this research agenda while extending existing programmes of research through the blending of theoretical frameworks, concepts and methodological approaches. The cluster is also well aligned with the Scottish Government’s revised Economic Strategy which identifies investment in education, skills and health; inclusive growth which promotes equality and tackles inequality; and innovative approaches to long standing economic and social problems as key priorities.

The project
There are a number of well documented variations in healthcare in the UK and in Scotland, both in terms of treatment or expenditure. Often this variation is cited as one of the reasons for believing that services are delivered "inefficiently" (after all, if otherwise similar populations in different places are being treated with differing levels of intensity, they cannot as a matter of logic all be receiving optimal treatment). Understanding the reasons for these variations is an important area of study. One, relatively neglected, dimension of the modelling strategy is the role of space in understanding outcomes. There are some papers in the literature which use these tools on UK health data, e.g. one explores the spatial dimension to mental health expenditure in England using a spatial panel approach. Central to this approach was estimating a supply and demand model that incorporated interaction between local authority areas. Other studies have demonstrated the important role that spatial variation plays in our understanding of healthcare issues including the spatial pattern of hospital admissions, healthcare expenditure, GP service, and learning disability services.
This PhD would contribute to an emerging literature in this area, utilizing econometric tools to improve our understanding of how to drive improvements in the healthcare sector. The initial focus would be on understanding local variations in healthcare expenditure, but thereafter the analysis will move away from a focus on the local decision units per se to consideration of smaller spatial scales. Specifically, we will examine the spatial pattern of hospital admissions within the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde area. This will allow us, while controlling for different predictors of hospital admission, to also consider the role of spatial variation and accessibility issues. This represents a major advance in the literature with the extant literature focusing on much more aggregate spatial levels of analysis.

The candidate
Candidates should have a good MSc degree in Economics or Health Economics or a related discipline, and be interested in health policy and/or applied econometrics. The project will require the use of standard econometric packages (e.g. Stata/Matlab etc), and so experience in the use of these statistical software packages is an advantage.

We work in international cross-functional teams developing and supporting product value strategy focusing on evidence-based economic modelling throughout the product life-cycle. 12) King's Health Economics (KHE) - Senior Lecturer vacancy, London, UK

King's Health Economics (KHE), formerly the Centre for the Economics of Mental and Physical Health, is looking to recruit a Senior Lecturer to develop a portfolio of economic research in an area of their own interest. The National Institute for Health Research Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care North West Coast (NIHR CLAHRC NWC) brings together NHS organisations, local authorities and academic leaders from the Universities of Liverpool, Lancaster and Central Lancashire, to accelerate the translation of research findings into service improvements and maximise the potential for applied health research within the partner organisations to improve health and reduce health inequalities. 
The key focus of the NIHR CLAHRC NWC’s applied health research and implementation programme is to find effective and innovative ways to tackle health inequalities across the region. The key programme themes are:
•      Delivering Personalised Health and Care
•      Knowledge Exchange and Effective Implementation
•      Evidence Synthesis Collaboration
•      Improving Mental Health
•      Improving Public Health
•      Managing Complex Needs
 
The NIHR CLAHRC NWC is now inviting applications for full-time (3 years) PhD studentships to start in the forthcoming academic year (2015/2016).
 
We are looking for exceptional individuals to fill a new cohort of PhD studentships which are targeted at reducing health inequalities.   Suitable candidates should have at least an upper-second class (or equivalent) undergraduate degree in a relevant health, social care, or pertinent methodological subject. Candidates should also be able to demonstrate the following skills: communication, presentation/writing, IT, time-management and the ability to be self-motivated/work alone.
 
Students may choose to study at either the University of Liverpool (6 studentships available), Lancaster University (5 studentships available) or the University of Central Lancashire (5 studentships available). Bursaries will be provided through the partner universities and will incorporate an annual stipend of £14,057 and tuition fees.  All applicants need to be UK/EU nationals because of the nature of the funding. EU nationals will require an overall IELTS score of 7.

•	A project looking at chronic illness, economic insecurity and employment in system resilience in disadvantaged neighbourhoods (Project lead Dr Paula Holland)
•	A project looking at interventions aimed at increasing system resilience in disadvantaged neighbourhoods to enhance health and wellbeing amongst young people (Project lead Dr Mark Limmer)
•	A project looking at the role of neighbourhood resilience enhance recovery in the context of psychosis and severe mood disorders amongst people living in disadvantaged socio-economic circumstances (Project leads Professor Seven Jones andProfessor Fiona Lobban).
•	A project exploring the health and social impacts of participatory arts projects for supporting older stroke survivors and those with early stage dementia (Project leads Professor Christine Milligan and Dr Amanda Bingley)
•	A project looking at work, health, and health inequality (Project leads Professor Ian Walker and Professor Bruce Hollingsworth).
•	A project looking at real-time mapping of health inequalities (Project lead Professor Peter Diggle)
•	A project looking at mapping and managing the care of people with end stage alcohol related liver disease (MEDAL) to develop an integrated end of life care service (Project leads Dr Nancy Preston and Dr Mark Limmer)
•	A project looking at disability and socio-economic inequalities in health (Project leads Professor Carol Thomas and Professor Chris Hatton).
