This is an exciting opportunity for an academic biostatistician, medical statistician, health economist or econometrician who is looking to expand their portfolio of methodology expertise and contribute to the cutting edge of methods developments in data analytics.
The primary purpose of the post is to deliver, as principle analyst, the applied and methodological components of a large data project funded by the Scottish Chief Scientist’s Office within a collaboration between the University of Edinburgh and Imperial College London. The project has the following aims that exploit rich Scottish datasets:
• Measure the benefit from chemotherapy in a real-world early breast cancer population
• Validate commonly used web-based benefit prediction decision tools in Scotland
• Determine the feasibility of using the regression discontinuity design in this context
The successful applicant will work on this project as part of a programme of research that is developing and applying cutting-edge methods in the analysis of large healthcare datasets for the evaluation of health technologies and health policy. He or she will join a team of economists, data scientists, analysts, statisticians and methodologists working within the Usher Institute for Population Health Sciences at the University of Edinburgh, the Farr Institute and the Edinburgh Clinical Trials Unit.

We are offering an opportunity for a motivated health economist to join the Cambridge Centre for Health Services Research (CCHSR), a joint venture between the University of Cambridge and RAND Europe. The post holder will work on several studies with an economic or econometric component with a primary care focus. Join the research effort to reduce the burden of chronic disease
Chronic disease accounts for the majority of the burden of disease in the developed world. This burden can be reduced through well-targeted and co-ordinated public health policies. Public Health Decision Science explicitly seeks to identify which combinations of interventions to prioritise for action, and to estimate their return on investment. This programme will prepare graduates for rewarding careers in academia or stakeholder organisations allowing them to contribute to public health decision making to reduce the burden of disease in the UK and internationally.
About the programme
Generously funded by the Wellcome Trust, our four-year PhD Programme in Public Health Decision Science provides unique interdisciplinary training to equip graduates to be public health leaders and decision scientists of the future.
The first year offers a unique training opportunity; students will have access to senior scientists and public health decision makers and take a range of self-selected taught modules to complement their existing skills. Health and social sciences graduates will develop advanced quantitative analytical skills and those with quantitative analytical degrees will receive training in public health. Rotations through three “research attachments” will allow students to experience research in multiple topic areas with potential supervisors before finalising the topic of the research project they will complete during years two to four.
We award 5 studentships per year (three funded by the Wellcome Trust and two by the University of Sheffield), two of which can cover overseas fees.
Each studentship provides
• a stipend of £19,919 pa increasing to £23,997 pa over the 4 years
• tuition fees for 4 years, worth £5,052 pa for Home/EU students or £18,750 pa for international students.

Evaluations of diagnostic tests in the presence of an imperfect reference standard and the health economic considerations

Advances in biotechnology have led to a huge influx of novel, sophisticated diagnostic tests, with their manufacturer’s vying for access to lucrative healthcare markets. The standard approach used to determine a test’s diagnostic accuracy makes the assumption that the reference test is 100% accurate at discriminating between diseased and non-diseased patients, which is rarely the case.
A number of existing methodologies have been proposed to help overcome this difficulty, all of which can bias the estimation of the index test’s diagnostic accuracy and add an element of complexity to the diagnostic accuracy estimation.
This project offers an exciting opportunity for a PhD student to be at the forefront of diagnostic test methodology research and to apply value of information (VOI) analysis to determine whether the benefit provided by further research outweighs the cost of that research. VOI in this context can be used to explore whether the removal of bias and improvements in precision of estimates about diagnostic accuracy (narrowing the confidence intervals) is worth the time and costs required to carry out the additional research.
The project plan would include:
• An update of the latest systematic review on the methods used to evaluate a test when the reference standard is imperfect.
• A formal critique of the methods identified to select the most promising techniques for further consideration. Criteria used will be theoretical validity and practicality (are data requirements to use the method implausible).
• Application and development of these methods to case studies representative of different scales of the problem.
• Assessment of the magnitude and direction of the bias introduced by each of these methods.
• Value of information analysis comparing whether the gain in precision and removal of bias from each technique outweighs the `cost’ of additional research (costs included added methodological complexity, computational power, time, opportunity cost of delaying recommendations about the use of a new test etc.).
• Development of recommendations for implementing the various techniques for correcting for an imperfect reference standard, a topic of increasing importance in the age of molecular diagnostic tests, genomic medicine and companion diagnostic testing.
Candidates will have or be provided with training in test evaluation methodologies, systematic reviews, decision analytic modelling, R programming and Bayesian expert elicitation methodologies as well as other necessary statistical or health economic techniques.
