Invitation to OHE's 2016 Annual Lecture with Dame Sally Davies: 10 Years of NIHR: Achievements and Challenges for the Next Decade - 7 November 2016

Join OHE for an evening lecture with Professor Dame Sally Davies on Monday 7 November 2016 at the Royal College of Physicians, London. Professor Davies will use the occasion of the 10th Anniversary of the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) earlier this year to talk about NIHR’s successes and challenges for the future. 

Professor Dame Sally Davies FRS FMedSci is Chief Medical Officer (CMO) for England and Chief Medical Advisor to the UK Government. Ten years ago she spearheaded the creation of the NIHR, transforming the NHS’s approach to clinical and applied research in the UK in order to drive improvements in outcomes for patients. She led NIHR for its first decade before handing over to Professor Chris Witty, the DH’s new Chief Scientific Advisor, earlier this year.

At this OHE lecture Professor Davies will discuss:

The challenges of setting up NIHR, creating a model in which major hospital research centres have to compete for R&D money;
Promoting the role of women in science using the Athena SWAN initiative;
Developing UK research capability in the human genome and translating the results into clinical practice;
Shaping NIHR to create what the IOM termed The Learning Healthcare System with the use of Big Data and an emphasis on gathering «real world evidence» by tracking NHS patients through observational studies and more pragmatic trials;
Meeting the challenge of demonstrating the value (in terms of both health and wealth) of major NHS investment in R&D to the Treasury and others; Keeping the UK punching above its weight in both public and private biomedical research expenditure and output - linked to the interaction between NIHR and commercial R&D, notably but not exclusively, from the pharmaceutical industry;
Lessons for other countries, both high income and middle income, as to how to organise health system R&D.

The lecture will be held at 6pm on Monday 7 November 2016 at The Royal College of Physicians, 11 St Andrews Place, Regent's Park, London and will be followed by a drinks reception.
