1) Research Consultant - HTA York Health Economics Consortium

We are looking to recruit a Research Consultant to undertake a range of economic evaluation and modelling projects. Projects include developing and adapting models for both submission to health technology assessment agencies and for use with local decision makers on behalf of private sector companies.  Work commissioned by NICE comprises developing economic evaluations to assist with guideline development, critiquing economic evaluations submitted to NICE and undertaking methodological work.  
The primary purpose of the role is to develop and critique economic models on a wide range of projects.  The candidate will be expected to work in project teams alongside other research staff and project directors.  The successful candidate will report to an Associate Director or Project Director of YHEC.
The basic salary will be in the range £25,000 to £38,000 subject to qualifications and experience.

3) HTA leadership position - sunny Brisbane, Australia

Senior Research Fellow, Health Technology Assessment
The Centre for Applied Health Economics within the School of Medicine is seeking a highly motivated senior analyst to undertake economic evaluations and Health Technology Assessments (HTA) for national policy makers. The Centre is self-funded, and this position provides an opportunity to work with an excellent team of health economists and biostatisticians in a multi-disciplinary setting, to deliver high quality HTA's and economic advice with significant impact on policy. 

This is a fixed term (until 30 June 2020), full time position based at the Nathan campus, with the possibility of a further contract after this period subject to funding. 

The role: 
This position will lead the appraisal of industry submissions to the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee, including supervision of a team of senior research assistants undertaking HTA.

Additional duties include undertaking, preparing or appraising submissions to the Medical Services Advisory Committee for listing on the Medical Benefits Schedule, collaborating on research grant applications, and producing high quality research outputs such as reports to government bodies and publications in scientific journals. 

You will be encouraged to pursue your own programme of research and allowances will be made for this. You will take an active role on tender and grant applications, and provide academic leadership to other researchers from a variety of disciplines. 

The person: 
The successful candidate will have experience in HTA and the evaluation of industry submissions to the PBAC. An advanced tertiary qualification in a relevant field such as health economics or an evidence-based medicine discipline, together with experience of data analysis, strong organisational skills and leadership skills is essential.

You will have experience in designing and undertaking decision analytic models and/or evidence-based medicine research. In addition, you will have a record of writing reports for the Australian Government or a strong track record of research publications and a sound understanding of the Australian health policy-making environment.

Generous relocation assistance is available for the successful applicant.

Salary range: 
Senior Research Fellow: $111,104 - $128,113 per annum. Salary package including 17% employer superannuation contribution: $129,993 - $149,893 per annum.

Title: Can Food Purchase Data Inform us about Food Intake, Food Security and Food Sustainability?
This project will explore the potential for linking food purchase data with food intake measures and health data. Poor dietary habits place major health, social and economic burdens on societies. In addition to direct relationships between the nutritional quality of the diet and health; we also plan to explore associations with environmental sustainability. This project will have implications for both health and food security strategies. It aims to demonstrate that linkage between food purchases, food intake and health data is possible; to explore links between costs of food purchases and diet quality; and to develop and pilot an approach to link food intake with purchases in relation to food security and diet sustainability.

Applications are invited for this post based in the Division of Rehabilitation and Ageing. There are two posts advertised simultaneously - also see Senior Health Economist (Level 5).

The post will be accountable to the Professor of Health Economics, Professor Marilyn James. Although based in the Division of Rehabilitation and Ageing, this post will play a School-wide role across the whole School of Medicine (SoM) and with external research partners. The SoM are seeking to invest in and expand its health economics staff. It is envisaged that further expansion of the health economics core will occur within the Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences.

This is an exciting opportunity to join the SoM and contribute to the growth of health economics at Nottingham.
Applicants for this Level 4a post will have an Msc in health economics or with a strong health economics component. They will have a key role in assisting research teams with the health economics components of NIHR grants. The role holder will in addition have the opportunity to actively work on studies and to gain valuable experience in undertaking economic evaluations supervised by Prof. James. This role will be funded by the prestigious NIHR Nottingham Biomedical Research Centre which is a flagship organisation and world research facility that both supports the Nottingham University Trust Hospitals and the University hosted by Nottingham University Hospitals Trust. The NIHR BRC have identified health economics as an important area for growth and are investing in this new post.

The successful candidate will work on a range of projects both new and existing. These will include an NIHR RfPB - MiPain - Intravenous Morphine compared with Intravenous Paracetamol for Pain Relief in Patients Presenting with Acute Fractured Neck of Femur to the Emergency Department: A randomised, Double-Blind Non-inferiority Trial; an MRC funded study - Randomised double-blind controlled trial of connectivity guided theta burst transcranial magnetic stimulation versus repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation for treatment resistant moderate to severe depression: evaluation of efficacy, cost effectiveness and mechanism of action and a HTA funded trial - TORPEDO-CF a Trial of Optimal TheRapy for Pseudomonas EraDicatiOn in Cystic FibrosisTorpedo. The work will be in economic evaluation from trials to modelling and design through to analysis.

This post is for a health economist who wishes to gain career experience and a track record in publications. The candidate must be able to apply health economics methods in the health care setting and be able to communicate well with researchers who have little or no knowledge of health economics.

This post is offered on a full-time or part-time (29 hours minimum), fixed-term contract for a period of two years. Job share arrangements may be considered for this post.

9) MRC Skills Development Fellowships at the LSHTM, UK

The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) has been awarded two MRC Skills Development Fellowships (SDFs) for 2018. SDFs are three year training fellowships that seek to support early–career researchers to consolidate and further develop their skills in an MRC priority area. Health economics is one of three priority areas for the SDFs that LSHTM will award.

These prestigious awards will provide three years’ salary support at the Research Fellow or Assistant Professor level and up to £15,000 total in running expenses. They will enable appointees to establish their own research programmes at LSHTM. Candidates require the support of an LSHTM academic sponsor; applicants should liaise with their proposed sponsor when developing their application and obtain a letter of support prior to submitting their application

The MRC Skills Development Fellowships are available as a fixed-term contract of 36 months (full time) with successful applicants in post by September 2018. The Nuffield Department of Population Health contains world renowned population health research groups and provides an excellent environment for multi-disciplinary research and teaching. Based within NDPH, the Health Economics Research Centre (HERC) is a thriving group of health economists, with a varied research programme and a well-established reputation as a centre of excellence in this field.

We are seeking a Senior Researcher to support and extend the Oxford Biomedical Research Centre (OxBRC) economic research portfolio. Based in HERC and working closely with the BRC, the role will include research into simulation methods to model the efficiency of hospital processes, early-phase economic evaluation of new therapeutics as well as applied microeconometric research on person-centred care. You will also present findings by means of peer-reviewed publications, mentor and support junior team members and contribute towards research funding applications.

To be considered you will have a doctoral degree in economics, econometrics, biostatistics or a closely related field as well as experience in the analysis of large and complex data from experimental and non-experimental health studies. You will also have demonstrable knowledge of a range of research techniques (modern econometric, statistical and decision-analytic modelling methods) and strong programming skills (in R, Stata or similar).

PhD scholarship: Assessing the Cost of Road Traffic Casualties

For road safety engineering schemes and infrastructure investment the cost of road traffic casualties is an important metric. Many safety schemes are evaluated on the basis of first year rates of return that multiply the projected reduction by the specified cost per casualty. The effect is that millions of pounds of public funding is planned on the basis of casualty costs. The mechanism for calculating casualty costs was established in the 1990’s and formalised in a guidance document called Highways Economic Note 1. The calculations include some emergency care costs and a measure called ‘Willingness to Pay’ which seeks to establish an economic value for the loss. Since its inception, the costs have been routinely updated but the methodology has not been substantially changed despite a number of good reasons for thoroughly reviewing the calculations:

(1) the costs of personal injury claims have grown significantly in recent years;
(2) healthcare and responsibilities for acute care, rehabilitation and public health now exist in a very different marketplace;
(3) a uniform figure for the UK may not sufficiently reflect economic variance;
(4) casualty survival rates have changed with improved emergency care, but long-term rehabilitation costs are considerably higher;
(5) it is now feasible to deliver a more granular analysis on the basis of loss of prospective economic output by age, gender, geographic location and socio-economic background of the casualties.

This PhD will seek to take into account these factors, exploiting new data opportunities to develop a significantly improved methodology. The project has the potential to have a transformative effect on how the cost of road traffic accidents is assessed.

12) Research Associate in Public Health Economic Modelling, Sheffield University, UK

The School of Health and Related Research (ScHARR), University of Sheffield is seeking to appoint a Research Associate to contribute to the health economic modelling of tobacco and alcohol tax in the UK. This is a unique and exciting opportunity to join the Sheffield Alcohol Research Group, an internationally leading public health economic research team at a world-leading university. 

You will work on the SYNTAX project “Integrated evidence synthesis for joint appraisal of tobacco and alcohol tax interventions for harm reduction in the UK”. This three-year project is funded by the National Institute of Health Research's Public Health Research Programme and is a collaboration between the Universities of Sheffield and Bath.

You will contribute to modelling of the impact of potential changes to taxation on tobacco and alcohol consumption, health, economic and other societal outcomes e.g. work absence. Using health economic, statistical and epidemiological approaches, these analyses will make use of national survey data on individual consumption and spending, and health outcomes. You will be expected to develop detailed protocols, negotiate access to relevant data, analyse this data using appropriate methods (likely to include econometric analyses of price elasticities), prepare manuscripts and disseminate results to the public and scientific peers.

You will have direct research experience of statistical modelling using techniques such as regression or latent class analyses.  You will also have either experience and an enthusiasm to learn health economic modelling techniques.  You will have postgraduate qualifications in a numerate discipline such as statistics, epidemiology, economics, operational research or related subjects.
