Health Metrics at the Department of Public Health and Community Medicine conducts teaching, research and consultations on health statistics, epidemiological methods, and health economics. The teaching is carried out within the health educational programs at the Sahlgrenska Academy as well as in PhD level courses on quantitative research methods. The research is generally applied and is often carried out in collaboration with clinical and health researchers. We work with both large health register data sets as well as based on clinical trials. Some independent research with methodological focus is also carried out
Subject area description
Health Statistics at the Health Metrics unit, Department of Public Health and Community Medicine, Institute of Medicine, has a primary focus on applied statistical analyses in the health and medical sciences. Parts where we have substantial teaching and research include survival analysis, causal inference, econometrics, multivariate methods. The unit also has a role to coordinate all teaching and research in health and medical statistics at the medical faculty (Sahlgrenska Academy) at the university of Gothenburg.
The work tasks include teaching health and medical statistics in one or more of the degree programs at the Sahlgrenska Academy and conduct independent research on topics related to applied health and medical statistics. Moreover, tasks include research and statistical consulting in interdisciplinary research teams at the Sahlgrenska Academy, Sahlgrenska University Hospital and the Västra Götaland region. It is also expected that the candidate will actively seek external research funding as a principal investigator as well as a part in other research groups. Some administrative duties are also part of the position. Teaching is most often conducted in English, but some courses/workshops are given in Swedish. If the candidate is not able to teach in Swedish upon appointment, it is expected that the candidate will be able to do so within a number of years.
The qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance.
PhD in Statistics, Health/Medical Statistics, or Mathematical Statistics. Terminal degrees in other statistical areas (e.g. epidemiology or econometrics) may be substituted on a case-by-case basis. Demonstrated pedagogical skills are also required.
Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance.
Pedagogical and research qualifications will be equally important in evaluating applicants. The evaluation of research will rely strongly on the proposed statistical research program and its relevance to the work carried out at Health Metrics. Of importance is also experience in applied statistical analyses of health and medical data from clinical trials and/or from large health registers. Experience of statistical consulting with clinical and medical research groups is also an important criterion. In terms of pedagogical qualifications, primary focus will be on experience of teaching statistics to students in health and medical degree programs with no prior background of (university-level) statistics or mathematics.
Fluency in English is required. Swedish language skill is not necessary, but is a merit considering that some of our courses in the undergraduate programs are taught in Swedish.
Applications that have no formal certificates/courses on university level pedagogy are expected to complete such training during the first year of employment.

4) Job vacancy: Research Fellow, Centre for Health Economics, University of York
The Centre for Health Economics (CHE), wishes to appoint a Research Fellow at Grade 6/7 to work on a long-term project awarded through the UKRI Collective Fund ‘Growing Capability’ Award titled: GCRF Thanzi la Onse (Health of All), in collaboration with project partners in the UK, Malawi and Uganda. The project centres on supporting health and health care resource allocation decisions in sub-Saharan Africa, and involves collaboration with specialisms in epidemiology and modelling, as well as politics and governance.
The main duties of the role are to conduct research under the supervision of senior colleagues and to contribute to the production of research. This will also include communicating the results of research to different groups through written reports and papers, presentations at conferences and other forums, and at workshops and other meetings. You will be required to assist in the identification and development of potential areas of research and the development of proposals for independent or collaborative research projects
In addition at Grade 7 the post holder would:
• Supervise the research activities of less experienced colleagues, providing expert advice and guidance
• Participate actively in the planning and management of research projects more generally (e.g. communication with relevant stakeholders)
• Lead on or contribute to the leadership of the production of research outputs and research outcomes
• Attend departmental meetings as required and undertake appropriate managerial and administrative tasks in connection with the research activity
A Master’s degree in economics is essential in both roles, with a significant focus on health economics; and a PhD or comparable experience in health economics is essential for appointees at Grade 7 and desirable for appointees at Grade 6. Well-developed analytical skills, including a strong quantitative background and knowledge of relevant areas of economics to engage in high quality research is required. Experience of conducting research in health economics, development economics with a health focus, public health or health policy, and within African health systems is desirable. Appointees to Grade 7 are required to demonstrate ability to source research funding and supervise research activities of less experienced staff.
The post is full-time, although applications for part-time working will be considered (minimum of 0.8FTE), on a fixed-term basis of 24 months (for appointees to Grade 6) and open contract (for Grade 7 appointees)

The Department of Applied Health Research at University College London invites applications for the position of Professor of Health Economics to provide senior strategic leadership in applied health economics at UCL. This will involve collaborating with researchers at UCL by providing health economics input into research applications and funded studies, developing their own research interests, providing leadership in health economics research in NIHR CLAHRC North Thames and its successor, and playing an active role in teaching and PhD supervision.
The successful candidate will have a distinguished record of accomplishment in health economics applied to health services and delivery research.
