1) Alan Maynard PhD Studentship

We are looking for exceptional students to apply for a funded PhD opportunity at the Centre for Health Economics (CHE). This studentship is one way in which we are commemorating Professor Alan Maynard, Founder of CHE, who passed away in February 2018. The topics we are offering are linked broadly to his research interests.
CHE will fund a single studentship from the following three topic areas:

Supervision and research environment
The successful candidate will be supervised in CHE and will be registered either through the Department of Economics and Related Studies or Department of Health Sciences at the University of York, depending on the topic and candidate (see below). This is an opportunity to work in close contact with researchers in one of the most successful health economics research groups in the UK. CHE has a leading international reputation, and is one of the world’s largest health economics research centres. Its mission is to undertake “high quality research that is capable of influencing health policy decisions”. The Centre attracts some of the best and brightest people in the field in the form of PhD students and visitors from overseas, creating a vibrant research environment. The University of York is widely recognized as one of the leading research universities in the UK and is also at the top of the teaching quality rankings.

The award
The award will cover academic fees at the UK/EU rate plus a maintenance stipend for 3 years (£15,009 in 2019/20). Note that the UK government has confirmed that EU students starting in 2019/20 will continue to pay UK fees for the duration of their studies, even if the course concludes after the UK's exit from the EU (see https://www.york.ac.uk/study/postgraduate-research/fees/uk-eu/. Non-UK/EU students will be expected to meet the cost of the difference between the UK/EU rate and the international rate.
Students are welcome to register full-time or part-time.

Eligibility criteria
For Topics 1 and 2 the ideal candidate will have (or be about to complete) a Masters degree in economics or a specialisation within economics, with a substantial component in econometrics or a related quantitative subject and will be registered in the Department of Economics. The English language requirement in that department is IELTS: 6.5, with no less than 6.0 in each component.

For Topic 3 if applying via Department of Economics the eligibility criteria is the same as above. If you are applying via the Department of Health Sciences route note the English language requirement is a total IELTS score of at least 7 (or equivalent) with a minimum score of 6.5 in each component of the test.

Process for application
Applications should be received no later than Wednesday 29 May 2019 before 16.00h (UTC).

For Topic 3: Select PhD in Economics on the application form, in order to be registered in the Department of Economics and Related Studies or select PhD in Health Sciences to be registered in the Department of Health Sciences. Please also provide a curriculum vitae and two academic references. In addition, you should upload an outline of your intended approach to the area of research, noting the potential methods or approaches that could be used (up to 500 words in PDF format). If you have already published academic papers, one of these may also be uploaded.

Interviews
Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed. Interviews take place on Wednesday 19 June 2019.
At interview, candidates will be expected to give a short presentation on their proposed project including relevant literature, potential data sources and applicable methods. It should also focus on their plans for the studentship for which they have applied and the skills they would bring to their doctoral research. 
Students residing overseas will be offered an opportunity to be interviewed using the University’s video-conferencing facilities (eg SKYPE or ZOOM).

2) Research Fellow/ Senior Research Fellow post at City, University of London, UK

Responsibilities
This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic candidate to work on economic evaluation of cancer innovations. The post holder will be based at the School of Health Sciences at City, University of London and will work on a number of clinical trials led by the Royal Marsden for two years. City, University of London has a fast growing team of health economists and health services researchers while the Royal Marsden is a word-leading research institution on cancer innovations.

The post holder will be primarily responsible for providing economic evaluation expertise to Royal Marsden’s specific clinical trials. Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator the post holder will work closely with a multi-disciplinary team to understand and shape policy around cancer innovation at a local and national level. The post holder will be responsible for developing decision making models, writing draft reports for the Royal Marsden and contributing to publications for peer-reviewed journals.

Person Specification
The ideal candidate should have (or will be about to complete) a PhD in Health Economics or equivalent area, with a focus on economic evaluation. Excellent skills in decision modelling and experience in applying economic evaluation methods are essential.

3) PhD in sport/health economics, Sheffield Hallam University, UK

There is a growing consensus in the academic and policy community that sport and physical activity create societal impacts, including but not limited to health, subjective wellbeing, crime, education and social capital. However, research on measuring and valuing these non-market benefits is underdeveloped. 

In 2014, researchers in the Sport Industry Research Centre (SIRC) at SHU developed a national model to measure the Social Return of Investment (SROI) for Sport in England. The PhD will use this work as a starting point, and draw on economic theory to advance knowledge and understanding on the social impact of sport. The PhD may focus on the social impact and value of sport at the population level across all outcomes, or specifically on one outcome area (for example education). We envisage that this work will be multidisciplinary, drawing upon evidence from health, economics and other social sciences. 

We are offering the opportunity to work with one of the UKs leading research centres in the field of sports economics, as well as in an area of cutting-edge policy development. There will be opportunities to work with real world clients as part of your study and to gain teaching experience if you are interested in developing a rounded academic career.
 
Entry requirements 
Successful applicants will have all of the attributes listed below. 
• A good undergraduate degree (2:1 or higher) in a relevant subject (e.g. Economics, Sport Management, Health Economics, Statistics, Geography). 
• A Master’s degree in a relevant area, or equivalent professional research experience. 
• Where English is your second language you will have a strong proficiency in English (IELTS minimum overall score of 7.0 with at least 6.5 in each component).
 
The successful candidate will also have excellent interpersonal skills and confidence in communication. You will have experience in literature searching and reviewing, quantitative analysis and report writing. Desirable attributes would include professional or research experience in econometrics, economics, statistical modelling or financial accounting. A strong commitment to investigating the wider contribution of sport to society is essential

RESEARCH ASSOCIATE IN HEALTH ECONOMICS
GRADE 6: £32,236-£36,261 (DEPENDING ON EXPERIENCE)

The University of Manchester, invites applications for the post of Research Associate in Health Economics. This is an exciting position to work on the evaluation of a range of transformation schemes in Tameside and Glossop. These schemes are funded by the Greater Manchester Health and Social Care Partnership as part of Greater Manchester’s devolution work and aim to improve the health and wellbeing of the local population. The work has the potential to inform and shape the health care system in Tameside and Glossop. This is an excellent opportunity to undertake research on policy evaluation and inequalities in health. The role will involve analysing both survey and administrative data to assess the impact of the schemes on health service use, costs, and health outcomes. Additional analyses will seek to inform whether schemes may impact on health inequalities and on the future economic sustainability of the area. The post is available immediately and will be tenable on a fixed term basis for 24 months in the first instance.
 
This position is based in the Manchester Centre for Health Economics. You will be line-managed by Dr Will Whittaker, Senior Lecturer in Health Economics.

Bangor University is seeking to appoint a Research Officer to its Centre for Health Economics and Medicines Evaluation (CHEME). Applications are invited from post-doctoral researchers with an existing track record of quantitative or mixed methods health services research.
 
CHEME is a leading research unit, with a portfolio of projects in the areas of pharmaceutical economics and policy, economic evaluation alongside clinical trials, public health economics, and methodological research. Based on research outputs, the Research Excellence Framework indicated that we are rated 3rd out of 94 institutions across the UK, with 95% of outputs being world leading and internationally excellent.
 
This post offers an excellent opportunity for career development for a post-doctoral researcher with experience of conducting health services research (quantitative or mixed methods). Applications by researchers with experience of preference elicitation methods are particularly welcomed. CHEME is a multidisciplinary research unit and draws from a wide variety of background including health economics, behavioural sciences, statistics, and pharmacy/clinical/health specialities.
 
The post holder will contribute to a project funded by North West Cancer Research (NWCR), to elicit patient and healthcare professional preferences for benefits and risks of treatments for colorectal liver metastases. The work will primarily involve systematic review of clinical literature, qualitative interviews with patients, and the design, conduct and analysis of a survey including a discrete choice experiment to elicit preferences for cancer treatment in North West England and North Wales.

Applications are welcome from candidates with a PhD (or near completion) in a relevant subject i.e. health economics, social or behavioural science, or health services research.   The candidate will have good inter-personal skills, previous experience of conducting empirical research in a health care setting, and an ability to work in a multidisciplinary environment.
 
The post is available from 1st June 2019 (or as soon as possible thereafter) until 31st May, 2020.   Applications are also welcome for part-time appointments. An extension beyond this will be dependent on research funding being awarded to the post holder and the research unit.
