2) Health Economics PhD opportunities, Centre for Health Economics, Monash University, Australia
The Centre for Health Economics at Monash University is pleased to invite applications from suitably qualified individuals to undertake a PhD in Health Economics.
PhDs are available in all areas of health economics, but we specifically welcome expressions of interest on the following topic:
- Ethical issues in priority setting (including under what circumstances, and to what extent, it is acceptable to compromise on efficiency to benefit the more severely ill, certain age groups, those who have a limited potential to benefit from treatment (the disabled and chronically ill), and those who are expensive to treat).
The successful applicant will be supervised by Dr John McKie.
Generous scholarships of around $25,000 per year (tax free) are available (for both Australian/New Zealand and international students), while highly competitive students can receive top-up awards of up to $15,000. There is also the possibility of Research Assistant work and/or Teaching to further top up any funding.
To be considered for a scholarship the following are essential requirements:
- A first class Honour’s or Master’s degree in economics or health economics (which includes a research project or thesis)
The Centre for Health Economics has been at the forefront of health economics teaching and research in Australia for 20 years. As the largest health economics research centre in the Southern Hemisphere, it has a strong track record of health economics research, teaching and community service. The Centre has close research links to the Departments of Econometrics and Business Statistics, Economics, and Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine and co-supervision is possible. The Centre also has excellent international links and a large PhD program with superb dedicated facilities.

3) NIHR Research Methods Internship in Health Economics, Manchester Centre for Health Economics, Institute of Population Health, The University of Manchester
This is an exciting opportunity to gain research experience and specific knowledge of the application of methods of economic evaluation within a healthcare setting in a leading research environment. The key purpose of this Internship is to offer research experience under the supervision of a team of health economists, including Katherine Payne (Professor of Health Economics), Eleanor Heather (NIHR Research Methods Fellow) and Dr Mark Harrison (Research Fellow in Health Economics) and a clinical expert in rheumatology Deborah Symmons (Professor of Rheumatology & Musculoskeletal Epidemiology). The Intern will work closely with Eleanor Heather on a project that aims to apply statistical modelling techniques and methods of economic evaluation to the evaluation of interventions for rheumatoid arthritis. Good numeracy and communication skills will be essential for this position within a multidisciplinary research team.
You should either be a recent graduate, or about to enter the final year, of a relevant numerate/quantitative UK degree such as: Economics, Econometrics, Mathematics or Physics. Candidates with/studying for academic degrees in other disciplines and a substantial record of using statistical / mathematical / economic / quantitative skills will also be eligible dependent on a demonstrable experience for example an ‘A’ level in Maths. This Internship would suit an individual with an interest in developing a career in a quantitative research discipline.
Stipend: £3500 total
This position is tenable for three months between July and September 2013

Health Economics Consulting is a wholly-owned, UEA Enterprise established in 2011. We now wish to appoint a Research Associate for a fixed-term contract, to provide assistance in the delivery of consultancy projects to paying clients across the health and social care sectors.
The appointee will work closely on new and existing projects with senior academics and consultants in the preparation of reports and analysis. Routine tasks will include setting up spread-sheet models and searching for outcomes, cost and other quantitative and qualitative data in the preparation for economic assessments and reviews as well as contributing to the development of new proposals and tenders for work. The role holder will have a good first degree in Health Economics and an interest in practical, applied economics.

The IEB (Barcelona Institute of Economics) invites applications for 2 PhD Scholarships, for a period of 3 years, starting from September 2013. The yearly amount of the salary is 15.000€. Position Description
Develop new research opportunities, initiate collaborative research projects, and provide input to ACS’ nutrition and physical activity initiatives to inform public policies on both national and local levels. Publish research papers, contribute to research service publications, and other relevant reports and books with the goal of developing public policy recommendations and strategies for policy change. Collaborate on research publications with the staff of the Intramural Research Department, and with external collaborators. Support the Managing Director of the International Tobacco Control Research Program (the Program) in day-to-day management responsibilities, including that of junior research staff. Represent ACS and the Program at conferences and meetings, both within and outside ACS.
•Analyzing data and developing original research publications relevant for developing policies related to nutrition and physical activity
