FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT
78th STATISTICAL MECHANICS CONFERENCE
RUTGERS UNIVERSITY, HILL CENTER, ROOM 114
SUNDAY, MONDAY, AND TUESDAY, DECEMBER 14-16, 1997
Dear Colleague:
The next statistical mechanics conference will take place on
December 14-16, 1997, at Rutgers University.
This meeting will celebrate the 60th birthday of LEO KADANOFF and
the 70th birthday of BEN WIDOM, two outstanding members of our community.
Special events will include a presentation to Widom at Sunday's lunch of a
special issue of Physica dedicated to him,, a banquet for Kadanoff on
Sunday evening, and a round table, Monday evening, chaired by Michael
Fisher, on the topic "Scaling in Nature and the Nature of Scaling", in
which L. Kadanoff, B. Mandelbrot, G. West and M. Widom will participate.
A more complete program will be sent out later. Meanwhile, you
can
get additional information about ALL ASPECTS of the meeting in a file
labeled smm which you can reach directly by anonymous ftp to
`math.rutgers.edu'--- give `anonymous' as the username and give your email
address as the password. You should switch to the appropriate directory
by
`cd pub/smm'. Alternatively, this file can be reached via your Web
browser
at the URL file://math.rutgers.edu/pub/smm. This file will be updated on
a
regular basis.
