Fellowships

The Joint Research Centre - the Research Centre of the European
Commission -
is offering individual research fellowships to interested scientists
under
various schemes.
Introduction

The fellowships or grants are awarded to individuals in order to allow
them
to spend a period of up to three years at one of the Institutes of the
Joint
Research Centre (JRC).

Who may apply?

The fellowships may be awarded to any national from EU and EFTA
countries or
Associated States, in order that he/she may pursue his/her research
activities, for a limited time period, in a JRC Institute. The
scientific
profile of the candidate must fit with the JRC scientific competences.

Postgraduate students/ Ph.D. students

Young researchers under the age of 35 who hold a degree obtained from a
university or equivalent institution of higher education, which
qualifies
the holder to embark directly on a doctorate or equivalent degree and
wish
to specialise by taking advantage of the scientific expertise and/or
facilities available at the JRC either in view of his/her future work or
in
view of his/her doctoral thesis.
The monthly grant will be between 1300 ECU and 3800 ECU. These gross
amounts
are calculated to enable, as far as possible, the grantholder to be
offered
a net amount comparable to the one received by a researcher of
equivalent
level in the host country. The duration of the stay at the JRC is up to
three years.

Scientists at post-doctoral level

Young researchers under the age of 35 holding a doctoral or equivalent
degree or, alternatively, having at least four years of full-time
research
expertise at post-graduate level. The monthly grant will be between 2500
ECU
and 4900 ECU.
These gross amounts are calculated to enable, as far as possible, the
grantholder to be offered a net amount comparable to the one received by
a
researcher of equivalent level in the host country. The duration of the
stay
at the JRC is up to two years.
If the grantholder continues to receive other income connected with
his/her
activity or professional status without engaging in that activity de
facto,
he/she is required to declare this in the application form. In this
case,
the gross monthly amount allocated to the grantholder is fixed by the
Commission taking into account his/her additional income, in order that
the
grantholder's gross amount corresponds to the amount which he/she could
have
claimed in accordance with the scale.

Visiting scientists

Senior scientists having a long scientific experience - such as a
university
professor under sabbatical year - may stay at the JRC under the visiting

scientists scheme in order to exchange their scientific expertise with
JRC
staff. This scheme, contrary to the above mentioned, is not restricted
to
nationals of EU and EFTA countries or Associated States but is open
world-wide. The monthly allowance will be around 5500 ECU. The duration
of
the stay at the JRC is up to one year, renewable for another year.

National experts seconded to the JRC

Officials of the Member States and scientists working in national
research
centres can apply to be seconded as a national expert to the JRC for up
to 3
years. The monthly allowance is approximately 3,000 ECU on top of their
salary.

Industry secondments

Scientists working in industry can also spend time in the research
Institutes of the JRC as part of an industry secondment contract. The
duration of the stay and the financial conditions are to be agreed on a
case-by-case basis.

How are decisions made?

Decisions to allocate the grants/indemnities are taken considering the
scientific value of the project, its coherence with the JRC scientific
competence, the researcher's CV and the financial possibilities of the
JRC.

When & how to apply?

The fellowships scheme runs on a continuous and permanent basis.
Applications forms and more details on the grant opportunities and on
the
other schemes at the JRC may be obtained by writing to the relevant JRC
Institutes' representatives to whom subsequent applications should be
submitted directly.

The procedures are particular to each category. For further information
please contact the relevant JRC Institutes' representatives.
