Postdoctoral Research Fellowships
Department of Physics & Astronomy and IRC in Polymer Science and
Technology

Three EPSRC funded postdocs.

The following posts are available immediately, for various periods from
1 to 2 years:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
NMR Studies of dynamics in multicomponent polymer melts. The systems
to be studied comprise tailor-made and isotopically-labelled miscible
blends over a wide range of molecular weight, and diblock copolymers,
above and below the ODT. Relaxation measurements will be carried out
using proton, deuterium and carbon-13 NMR, to determine fundamental
parameters such as friction coefficients and entanglement spacings.
Previous NMR experience is highly desirable, but not essential.

Available for 18 months.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Complex Fluids Theory. An opportunity for a theoretician to study
the kinetics and rheology (linear and non-linear) of hydrophobically
modified polyacrylamide solutions. This work will involve primarily
analytic calculations for specific systems synthesized in the School
of Chemistry at Leeds as well as studying the general aspects of these
systems. Applicants should have a working knowledge of statistical
mechanics and polymer/complex fluids dynamics.

Available for 2 years or until 1 February 2004.

Informal enquiries to Dr Peter Olmsted tel/fax: +44(0)113 233 3830/3846,

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Mechanical characterisation of tailor-made polymers. This is part of
a large multi-disciplinary collaboration between the Universities of
Leeds, Bradford, Cambridge, Durham, Oxford and Sheffield on micro-scale
polymer processing and its relationship with structure and properties.
The person appointed will be engaged in characterising the mechanical
properties of model polymers, aiming to establish relationships between
molecular parameters such as chain length and branch structure, and
mechanical properties and their dependence on processing history.

Available for 1 year.

Informal enquiries to Dr Alan Duckett tel/fax +44(0)113 233 3816/3846,

Job ref: 052-100- 004-027
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
In addition to the specific requirements mentioned, all applicants must
have a PhD in Physics, Physical Chemistry or a related discipline, and
knowledge of polymer science.

Salary: Research 1A (£17,451 - £26,229 p.a.) according to age,
qualifications and experience.

Closing Date: 21 January 2002

Application packs may be obtained from Mrs Maureen Thompson, Department
of Physics and Astronomy, University of Leeds, Leeds LS2 9JT, UK,
