The Stepping Motor Protein as a Feedback Control Ratchet

Martin Bier (East Carolina University, USA)

Motor proteins are nanometer size engines that take care of a cell's
internal transport needs. They take the energy of ATP hydrolysis and pull
vesicles and organelles to their destinations as they turn this energy
into directed motion along a biolpolymer. Many experimental data on motor
proteins have become available over the last decade. Simple Brownian
ratchet models turn out to account remarkably well for these data. Models
and data will be presented. The role of internal friction in the
operation of a motor protein will also be discussed.
