The Soft Matter group at the IFF Soft Matter at the Research Center
Juelich invites applications for a

Ph.D. candidate in Experimental Physics of Soft Matter

Applications of physical chemists or physicists with a strong background
in chemistry are welcome.

The Soft Matter group at the IFF at the Research Center Juelich is a
young group which was founded in the year 2000
(http://www.fz-juelich.de/iff/d_iwm). The group consists of highly
motivated leading scientist in Soft Matter physics, which integrates
chemists, physicists and materials scientists in a multidisciplinary
environment. The excellent infrastructure of the institute, provides all
the equipment necessary for soft matter physics.

In this project which is supported by the German research council we
plan systematic measurements on the thermal diffusion behavior (Soret
effect) in mixtures of rigid and chain-like molecules with and without
specific interactions. The goal is to gain a better microscopic
understanding of the thermal diffusive process. The data will be
obtained by means of a holographic grating technique the so-called
thermal diffusion forced Rayleigh scattering (TDFRS). We want to study
three groups of low molecular weight mixtures: /Rigid molecules,
chain-like molecules /and /molecules with specific interactions/. All
experiments will be executed in close collaboration with the theoretical
group which performs simulation on the same systems.

The position is for three years and the salary will be around 1200
euros/month + social benefits + health insurance.
