Dear Subscribers:
You are encouraged to make use of SMBnet and the SMB Digest, which
were
established in 1992 and have grown steadily in content and
subscription. The
Digest commenced publication with less than two hundred subscribers
and has
grown to be distributed semi-monthly to over a thousand subscribers.
The
number of items per issue has increased from less than 5 the first
year to
about 8 presently, while the number of issues has increased by a
third.
This
growth parallels the increase in activity and vitality in the field.
You are also invited to visit "SMBnet" under "Publications" at the SMB
web
page (www.smb.org), and to submit not only announcements of positions
available, meetings to be held and publications, but queries/requests
and
other items of interest to SMB members and the
mathematical/theoretical
biology community as a whole. Send your e-mails to: [log in para visualizar]
If you are currently not a member of the Society, you might click on
"Joining SMB" at the home page, and see the benefits of membership.
Wishing all Happy Holidays, Feliz Navidad, Prospero A¤o y Felicidad!

MASAMB-XI
11th Annual Meeting on
Mathematical and Statistical Aspects of Molecular Biology
Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences, Cambridge
Tuesday 20th March - Wednesday 21st March, 2001
Scientific Organisers: David Balding (Department of Applied
Statistics, University of Reading), Nick Goldman (Department of
Zoology, University of Cambridge), Nuala Sheehan (Department of
Epidemiology & Public Health, University of Leicester)
The 11th annual meeting on Mathematical and Statistical Aspects of
Molecular
Biology will be held at the Isaac Newton Institute for the
Mathematical
Sciences, Cambridge, on Tuesday 20th March and Wednesday 21st March,
2001.
The meeting aims to bring together mathematicians, statisticians,
biologists
and computer scientists who have common research interests in the
analysis
of
molecular biological data.
The meeting will follow its familiar format, with 12-15 approximately
half-hour talks selected from participants' applications. These will
run
from early afternoon on 20th March until afternoon tea on 21st March,
with
ample opportunities provided for discussion. The cost of attendance at
the
meeting (academic rate) will be £85 (full residential) or £60 (without
accommodation), with some reduction available for students.
After the main part of MASAMB-XI, it will be possible for one or more
'special interest groups' ('SIGs') to take advantage of the presence
of
like-minded scientists and make use of the Newton Institute's
facilities to
stage further talks, continued discussions, etc. SIGs could take
place in
the later part of the afternoon of 21st March, or on Thursday 22nd
March.
The MASAMB-XI Scientific Organisers are dependent on others to propose
and
organise any SIGs: please contact any of them to discuss proposals.
Please
note that plans for any SIGs must be fully agreed by 15th December
2000.
This will be the only mailing of this notice!
Please inform your colleagues of this notice!
If you would like to attend the meeting, or simply receive further
information, it is vital that you complete the attached form and
return it
before 15th December 2000. Further information will only be sent to
registered applicants. Accommodation will be quite limited for this
meeting,
and it is important that we get accurate estimates of numbers
attending as
soon as possible. Completed forms should be sent (preferably by
e-mail) to:
Tracey Andrew ([log in para visualizar]) Isaac Newton Institute for
Mathematical Sciences, 20 Clarkson Road, Cambridge CB3 0EH, UK
For further details regarding the scientific content of the meeting,

Thesis at the Univ.-Clinic Innsbruck
Financial support: 800 Euro per month + social security
Topic: "Flow and Pressure Simulation in the Lungs"
Candidates background: The candidate for this thesis should have a
good
programming background. Knowledge on aerodynamics is desirable but not
condition.
Additional information: Different simulation models of the lungs
should be
investigated (a lumped parameter model and an aerodynamic model of the
upper
airways based on CT-data and V-p-measurements of the lung segments).
We use
ACSL and FIDAP-FLUENT for our simulations. Previous knowledge about
these
software packages is not necessary. Flow experiments in pig lungs will
be
used to validate the simulations.

POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH POSITION IN STATISTICAL BIOINFORMATICS
A three year post-doctoral position is available to work on an
exciting
problem at the interface between molecular genomics and biostatistics.
The
project is to develop stochastic models that will help in
understanding how
genes are regulated in living cells and how intrinsic stochastic
variation
can affect this regulation. It is funded by the BBSRC/EPSRC
Bioinformatics
Initiative. The successful applicant will join an interdisciplinary
team of
researchers (Dr Richard Boys, Prof Tom Kirkwood and Dr Darren
Wilkinson). A
detailed description can be found on the project web page:
http://www.ncl.ac.uk/statistics/bioinformatics/networks.html
Applicants should have (or be near to completing) a PhD in Statistics,
Mathematical Modelling, Computational Biology or a related discipline.
Knowledge of both Bayesian statistics and genetics would be
advantageous but
is not required. The post is a joint appointment between the
Department of
Statistics and the Department of Gerontology at Newcastle University.
The
appointee will be based primarily in the Department of Statistics and
will
join active research groups in Bayesian statistics and statistical
bioinformatics.
Further information regarding this position can be obtained from the
web
page:
