        Dear All,

Due to an unexpected last-minute withdrawal, we
have a PhD studentship in the nonlinear group that can be filled with
immediate effect. So, if you know of any good students who might be
interested, we should be very grateful if you could alert them to this
opportunity.

The Physics Department Lancaster is a good place to work.
Amongst other things, it gained the top grade of 5*A in the recent UK
Research Assesssment Exercise (the only others being Oxford, Cambridge,
and Imperial College London).

There is considerable choice of topic within the general
area of nonlinear dynamics and nonequilibrium processes, including:
fluctuations in systems with limit cycles; nonlinear dynamics applied
to physiology; cardiovascular dynamics; Brownian ratchets; ionic
currents through open ion channels in biological cells; fluctuations
and the energy-optimal control of chaos; and fluctuations in Vertical
Cavity Semiconductor Emitting devices. For further details, see the
group's web pages and in particular -

http://www.lancs.ac.uk/users/spc/jobs/rs_nld.htm

The research involves a network of international collaboration with the
top international experts in the field - in e.g. Ljubljana, Manchester,
Michigan, Moscow, NASA/Ames, Pisa, Saratov, Torun, Tucson and Warwick.

Those interested should contact Peter McClintock by e-mail
([log in para visualizar]) or telephone (01524-593073), or
Dmitri Luchinsky by e-mail ([log in para visualizar],uk) or telephone
(01524-65201 ext 93079 or 93206).

        All best wishes,
        Peter McClintock and Dmitri Luchinsky.
