PROJECT TITLE: Methane production via anaerobic digestion using high ionic strength waste streams (MET_BIONIC)

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The main objective of MET_BIONIC is to optimize the production of methane via anaerobic digestion from high ionic strength waste streams (HISS). In doing so, the specific objectives of  MET_BIONIC are threefold: i) To elucidate the most suitable reactor configuration, operation conditions, tolerable ionic strength threshold and key microbial genera to maximize methane production; ii) To determine the impact of high ionic strength waste streams in the microbial physical structure and identify the most suitable physical structure that ensures process robustness for methane production and; iii) To assess the techno-economic feasibility and environmental impact of the optimal reactor configuration and operations conditions of the processes to convert HISS into methane.

DURATION: 01/09/2025 – 30/07/2029 

REQUIREMENTS AND EXPERIENCE: 
- Bachelor on Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Environmental Sciences or related fields.
- Master on Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering or related fields is desired.
- Oral and written communication skills in English.
- Candidates should be motivated by research to conduct PhD studies, with a serious and committed approach to their work responsibilities.
