Background:
CHEPI is seeking to appoint an Advanced or Senior Research Fellow in Health Economics to lead and contribute to a number of multi-disciplinary research projects which require the use of a variety of economic analysis approaches and skills. These projects include: Children’s Places — a Health Foundation funded project aiming to explore how the health of secondary school children (aged 11 to 19) is influenced by the characteristics of the physical and virtual places in which they spend their time; and, Public Health Impacts of UK’s Clean Air Zones — an MRC funded project aiming to explore the health and health economic impacts of clean air zones in the UK, particularly in London and Birmingham.
 
We expect the successful candidate will invest considerable time in supporting the development of CHEPI through advising research staff and leading the development of research grant applications, which can also be used to extend the duration of the fellow’s contract.

2) Research Fellow in Health Technology Assessment & Modelling

We are looking for two researchers with exceptional analytical and communication skills to join our team producing evidence to support the effective and cost-effective use of medicines and other healthcare technologies. 

The Southampton Health Technology Assessments Centre (SHTAC) is a centre of excellence for HTA. We find, review and pool clinical evidence and use methods of decision analysis and health economic evaluation to assess benefits for patients and value for health service funders. We are one of nine Technology Assessment Review (TAR) teams funded through the National Institute for Health Research Evidence Synthesis Programme (NIHR ESP) to provide independent and objective reports for the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). We have an active programme of other funded research, including cost-effectiveness analyses in the context of clinical trials, secondary data analysis and modelling studies.

Working as part of the SHTAC health economic team, you will: critique submitted evidence and models for NICE technology appraisals; review health economic literature; analyse cost and outcome data from clinical trials; develop models to estimate long-term costs and effects; write reports and academic research papers; interact with NICE staff, committees, research collaborators and other stakeholders. You will be encouraged and supported to extend your knowledge of relevant methods, to develop your own research interests, to publish high quality reports and papers and to present at local, national and international conferences and meetings. Funding for relevant training is available, and if needed we will support you in completing a part-time post-graduate course.

You will have a PhD* or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in economics, statistics, operational research or another numerate and analytical discipline. In addition to technical knowledge and skills, you must be a good writer, work effectively in a team and communicate well. 

Appointment will be made on the level 4 research pathway scale: £30,942 – £38,017 according to experience.

3) Research Fellow and Research Manager TORCH Study Australian National University 

The Department of Health Services Research and Policy at the Australian National University is seeking to appoint a Research Fellow with expertise in qualitative research methods and an experienced Research Manager as part of the Tools for Outcomes Research to measure and value Child Health (TORCH) study funded by the Australian Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF).
 
This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to an international and interdisciplinary program of work which will provide policymakers with robust evidence on the appropriateness of existing tools and the development of new tools to measure and value health in children for use in health technology assessment.

Title: Assessing the cost-effectiveness of interventions for dementia using a care pathway approach
 
Description:
Cases of dementia are increasing in number as a result of an ageing population. There are no cures for dementia, but treatments and therapies do exist which aim to slow down its progression and to improve the quality of life of those with it. These include pharmacological treatments for Alzheimer’s disease (the most common type of dementia), memory clinics, talking therapies, and early detection strategies. Evidence is growing regarding the effectiveness of such options. However, they all require the use of scarce health and social care resources and so it is important to assess their cost-effectiveness. The aims of this PhD project are to: (i) review the cost-effectiveness of interventions to improve health for people with dementia and (ii) model the cost-effectiveness of alternative interventions introduced to routine practice in the UK. There are three main components to this PhD project. The first component of the project will be to conduct a systematic review of the UK and international literature on the cost-effectiveness (broadly defined) of interventions for dementia designed either to delay progression of the disease or to improve/maintain the health-related quality of life of those with it and conduct a review of reviews of clinical evidence for these interventions. The second component will be to construct a simulation model to map out routine care pathways for people with dementia. The model will then be used to assess the cost-effectiveness of the introduction or expansion of specific therapies and interventions.
 
This doctoral project will enable the student to work closely with economists and clinicians who have a track record of dementia-related work. It is expected that the research will result in high-impact publications and other outputs and will provide the student with a valuable opportunity to continue in this field.

The Department of Health Sciences provides a collegiate and collaborative environment for the conduct of nationally and internationally relevant research and teaching examining contemporary issues aligned with the College Research Centres and University Research Institutes.

This post is located in the Division of Global Public Health.
The Global Public Health Division and Health Economics Research Group (HERG) have an international reputation in public health research including ageing studies, health economics, health policy, health promotion, population wellbeing and behavioural science. Opportunities exist across the College and University to develop collaborations with clinical, allied-health and non-clinical experts.

The post holder will have an opportunity to advance existing collaboration through NIHR ARC Northwest London project, working closely with community health providers, local healthcare trusts, clinical commissioning groups, public health departments and other partners. You will be expected to lead or contribute to divisional research activities in health economics and public health.

The University of Manchester invites applications for the post of Research Associate to join the Economic Sustainability Research Theme within the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration for Greater Manchester (NIHR ARC-GM).  This position offers the opportunity to contribute to studying inequalities and equity in national and local health and care systems, with a focus on resource allocation and payment methods, and designing solutions and evaluating initiatives to increase economic sustainability.
 
Applicants will need a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in economics, public health or similar discipline with a substantial quantitative element. Applicants will also need to demonstrate understanding of micro-econometrics or advanced statistics for applied health research, and experience of managing and analysing complex survey and/or administrative data. The assessment of health interventions is one of the key areas of activity within HEHTA; this includes undertaking evidence synthesis, economic and decision modelling, and economic analyses of clinical trial data. 
 
We are currently seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Specialist – Statistics with relevant research skills and experience to join our group.  This is an exciting new joint post between HEHTA and the Scottish Medicine’s Consortium (SMC).  The successful candidate will be required to make a leading contribution to HEHTA’s advisory and assessment work for the SMC.  NHS Scotland spends around £1.8bn on medicines per annum.  The SMC carries out early health technology assessment (HTA) of all new medicines and has a remit to provide advice to NHS Boards and their Area Drug and Therapeutic Committees (ADTCs) across Scotland.  SMC assessment requires the appraisal of clinical and cost effectiveness data provided by pharmaceutical companies. It is critical that that the decision making on these medicines is well supported by robust and rigorous statistical advice.

9) Two funded PhD studentships for early-stage researchers

The two studentships are funded jointly by the National Institute for Health Research Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) East of England and the University of East Anglia.

The studentships will fund outstanding early-stage researchers to conduct applied research relevant to health economics and prioritisation in health and social care (H&SC). The Health Economics and Prioritisation Theme aims to inform choices about the implementation of H&SC services and interventions, by providing high quality evidence on costs and benefits. We work with other research themes in the ARC EoE to undertake research on a wide range of services and interventions, prioritising those that, when translated into practice, have the potential to lead to improvements in the health and well-being of patients, the population as a whole, and the sustainability of the H&SC system.
