1) Health Economist post at Centre for Evaluation and Methods, Queen Mary University of London.

The primary task of this role is to undertake a research project that aims to evaluate the implementation of Bedside Electronic Transfusion Checks (BETC) at Barts Health NHS Trust hospitals. The study is a collaborative work between colleagues from Queen Mary University of London, Barts Health NHS Trust, University of Oxford, and University of Manchester. The post is based at the Centre for Evaluation and Methods, Queen Mary University of London. 
 
The successful candidate will have a PhD (or equivalent research experience) in Health Economics or a related discipline. We are looking for previous experience of primary data collection, analysing large hospital data sets, conducting evaluation studies, and working in a multi-disciplinary research environment.
 
The post is based at our Whitechapel Campus in London. It is full time, fixed term appointment for 40 months, with an expected start date in January 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter.

2) Research Fellow in Vaccine Economics
 
Salary: £40,611 to £46,119 per annum, inclusive.

The Wellcome Trust has funded the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) in collaboration with the International Vaccine Institute and the World Health Organization to develop a full value of vaccines assessment for non-typhoidal Salmonellae vaccines. The postholder will bring forward an innovative programme of work to investigate the broader societal and economic benefits of these vaccines, such as future productivity, antimicrobial resistance reductions, improved equity and social protection.

The postholder will work with Prof. Mark Jit and will be part of the Modelling and Economic Evaluation of Vaccines (MEEV) group, a highly successful and supportive group with a long history of working with a range of countries around the world on generating evidence to support vaccination policy. The postholder will also have the opportunity to affiliate with relevant centres at LSHTM (including the Vaccine Centre, Centre for Mathematical Modelling of Infectious Diseases and Global Health Economics Centre).

3) Funded PhD: Systems Level Modelling in Older People/Urgent and Emergency Care with the Health Economics, evaluation and equality theme (HEEE) of the ARC YH
 
The School of Health Related Research, at the University of Sheffield is pleased to advertise a funded PhD opportunity.  The studentship is part of a research programme for the NIHR Applied Research Collaborations (NIHR ARCs). The studentship would be within the Health Economics, Evaluation and Equality (HEEE) cross-cutting theme of the Yorkshire and Humber ARC and will focus on one of the core themes outlined below. 
 
The Yorkshire & Humber NIHR ARC is a collaboration between NHS, social care, third sector and industry organisations and leading universities in Yorkshire and the Humber. It aims to transform services and improve peoples’ health and wellbeing and reduce health inequalities through four strategically important core themes:
•       Early life and Prevention
•       Older people with Frailty
•       Mental and Physical Multimorbidity
•       Urgent and Emergency Care

The HEEE theme aims to work collaboratively with the four core themes and in partnership with local NHS, public health and social care collaborators. This research will focus on improving efficiency and equity in the use of public resources using methods for conducting cross-sector evaluations including mathematical modelling, statistical and econometric methods. The HEEE theme are offering a PhD opportunity and strongly encourage candidates to propose topics in the following areas:
 
Older Peoples Theme
Develop a system level approach to model the economic arguments of implementing interventions to prevent/improve frailty and delayed transfers of care (DTOC) for older people with complex and heterogeneous needs. The theme will look to simulate the reality of supply side availability and constraints as well as using conventional economic theory to understand the economic incentives and outcomes for patients and stakeholders such as the NHS and Social Services.  
 
Urgent and Emergency Care Theme
Develop a systems modelling approach to identify and evaluate options for preventing excessive Emergency Departments waiting times. We are particularly interested in developing simulation approaches to examine system level interventions to reduce ED attendances and manage flows through a Department. For example, work may focus on the analysis of options to avoid unnecessary attendances or to avoid delays in transferring patients out of hospital, the design of performance metrics that avoid perverse incentives, or combinations of interventions. The successful applicant will have access to a large routine data set of the ED including arrivals, investigations and treatments in hospitals within the region to help inform the model.
 
Entry Requirements:
Candidates must:
•       be highly motivated to make a significant scientific contribution in health and social care through research that can inform well-evidenced, cost-effective health strategies
•       have completed an undergraduate degree (equivalent to 2.1 or above) in a relevant discipline (e.g. mathematics, statistics, epidemiology, economics, operational research, systems engineering, management science, physics, systems control).
•       have completed a master’s degree at merit or distinction (or a non-UK equivalent) in a relevant subject, or more than one year of formal employment in a relevant scientific environment
•       have excellent verbal and written communication skills

We are seeking a researcher with exceptional analytical and communication skills to join our team supporting national health policy decisions about the effective and cost-effective use of medicines and other healthcare technologies. 

The Southampton Health Technology Assessments Centre (SHTAC) is a centre of excellence for HTA, with expertise in finding, reviewing and synthesising clinical evidence and in the use of decision modelling and health economics to appraise benefits for patients and value for the National Health Service (NHS). We are one of nine Technology Assessment Review (TAR) teams contracted to provide independent and objective reports for the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). We also have an active programme of other research, including cost-effectiveness analysis in the context of clinical trials, data analysis and modelling.

Working as part of a close-knit health economics team you will be exposed to cutting edge methodologies as part of the NICE programme and will learn quickly.  You will evaluate and implement a range of cost-effectiveness models including Markov, individual state transition, and partition survival models.  You will use survival analysis techniques to extrapolate data beyond that observed in clinical trials.  There will be opportunities to contribute towards indirect treatment comparisons and network meta-analysis if these techniques are of interest. As part of the NICE programme, you will also write reports and engage with NICE staff, committees and other stakeholders. There will be opportunities to use skills learned as part of the TAR work in our programme of externally-funded research. Your work will directly contribute towards clinical decision making, enable patients to access innovative medications and technologies, while ensuring value for the NHS.

As a Senior Research Fellow, you will line manage and supervise staff, take the lead on NICE and other research projects, and develop new research proposals. You will be encouraged and supported to extend your knowledge and skills of relevant methods, to develop your own research interests, to publish high quality reports and papers and to present at local, national and international conferences and meetings. Funding for relevant training is available, and if needed we will support you in completing a part-time post-graduate course.
You will have a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in economics, statistics, operational research or another analytical discipline. In addition to technical knowledge and skills, you will be a good writer, work effectively in a team and communicate well.

The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine is a world-leading centre for research and postgraduate education in public and global health. Our mission is to improve health and health equity in the UK and worldwide; working in partnership to achieve excellence in public and global health research, education and translation of knowledge into policy and practice. The postholder will have opportunities for collaboration and support from pre-existing collaborations within LSHTM including through the Global Health Economics Centre: Global Health Economics Centre | LSHTM and the Centre for Statistical Methodology.

The post-holder will play a supporting role in three important studies. The first study is a Health Foundation study that will evaluate emergency surgery following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic (ESORT C-19). The second study is an MRC funded study examining advanced methods for establishing causal effects from routine data. The third study is an NIHR-funded cost-effectiveness analysis of alternative forms of non-invasive respiratory support for critically ill children.  

The post-holder will work support all three projects, working as part of existing teams. Reporting to the PIs, Professor Richard Grieve, and Dr Zia Sadique, the postholder will handle large complex datasets, and use advanced quantitative methods to establish comparative effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of alterative interventions.   
The successful candidate will have a postgraduate degree, ideally a doctoral degree in health economics, epidemiology, medical statistics or a relevant field.  Relevant experience of handling complex data from routine data sets and of undertaking advanced quantitative analyses for assessing comparative effectiveness is essential. This post is fixed term to 31 January 2024. The post is funded by the Health Foundation, the MRC and NIHR and is available to start on 1 February 2022.
