This is a new post that will be accountable to the Professor of Health Economics, Professor Marilyn James. Based in DRAW, the postholder will work across the School of Medicine (SoM) and with external research partners. Experience in health economic trials is essential and experience in health economic modelling desirable.
This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the growth of health economics at Nottingham. The applicant will have a PhD in health economics. The role holder will lead, on some of the existing portfolio in health economics, including NIHR programme grants, HTAs and EMEs, in multiple health areas including orthopaedics, paediatrics, and mental health. They will be expected to apply for funded research as a co-applicant and to mentor junior staff in the unit.
The successful candidate will work on a range of projects both new and existing. These include but are not exclusive to a new EME study: CAUTI: Catheter Against Urinary Tract Infection Trial: a randomised trial of antimicrobial-impregnated urinary catheters for long-term indwelling urinary catheter users; an existing EME: Brightmind : Randomised double-blind controlled trial of connectivity guided theta burst transcranial magnetic stimulation versus repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation for treatment resistant moderate to severe depression: evaluation of efficacy, cost effectiveness and mechanism of action; a new HTA: SATURN: Stimulant Medication for ADHD and Tics - Understanding Response versus Non-stimulants: a randomised trial of the clinical and cost effectiveness of methylphenidate versus guanfacine for ADHD in children and young people with a co-existing tic disorder and existing HTA:POINT : A multi-centre randomised trial of surgery versus non-surgical splint treatment for proximal phalanx shaft finger fractures in adults; and a programme grant: ROWTATE: Multicentre Research Programme to Enhance Return to Work after Trauma.
The full range of opportunities in economic evaluation are encompassed from project inception and design to bringing work to successful completion and analysis. The post will enable career development and the chance to develop clear management and analytical skills to improve the role holders’ career. The candidates must have the ability to communicate well with researchers who have little or no knowledge of health economics.

Recent research (the E-QALY project - https://scharr.dept.shef.ac.uk/e-qaly/about-the-project/) has developed a new classification system for calculating QALYs that going beyond health to include aspects of well-being including social relationships. This presents challenges for the methods used to elicit utility values as well as around the scope of the QALY itself and its role in informing cost-effectiveness analyses. This PhD studentship provides an exciting opportunity to research into critical methodological concerns in the area of eliciting preferences for states that combine both health and wellbeing and that may contain a large number of both overlapping and independent dimensions. The feasibility and appropriateness of different preference elicitation methods for use to value a widened classification system have not been fully explored.
The PhD will involve a literature review and primary research using a mixed methods approach involving both qualitative and quantitative research. In particular, the PhD will explore how discrete choice experiments (DCE) can be designed and undertaken to meet the challenges raised through a widened classification system including overlapping concepts and a large number of dimensions (potentially beyond the number that can be considered all at the same by a research participant). This will include both quantitative aspects of design alongside qualitative exploration of how participants undertake the DCE tasks, what influences their choices, and whether they understand the tasks. Towards the end of the project an online survey will be used to determine the feasibility of the use of DCE using a design building upon the findings from the qualitative research.

We are seeking candidates with experience primarily in health economics, epidemiology, biostatistics, pharmacy, pharmacology, or a similar health related qualification. People with quantitative skills, such as mathematics and science, will also be considered. The successful candidate will undertake research projects within our health technology assessment team.
