The economic crisis has had profound consequences in the labor market and public policies of many developed countries. Labor market conditions have deteriorated with increased unemployment rates and wage cuts. In addition, governments have responded to the pressure in the public finances with public sector wage cuts, reforms in the public pension system and the health care system, among others. This may have had an impact on the population’s health and/or the equity and efficiency of the health care system.
The Special Issue aims to provide evidence on the consequence of the economic conditions or government response to the economic crisis on mental, physical and self-reported health, health care use, waiting times, inequity in health and health care use, and long term care. Other papers that cover novel methodological aspects relevant to the previous topics will also be considered.
All the articles have to be original and provide novel empirical evidence on any of the topics listed above. All the articles will be subject to referee by external referees. The editors of the Special Issue are Pilar García-Gómez (Erasmus University; [log in para visualizar]), Sergi Jiménez-Martín (Universitat Pompeu Fabra; [log in para visualizar]) and José María Labeaga (UNED; [log in para visualizar]).

Workshop program
The workshop program will consist of ten papers + a keynote speech given by Christopher J. Ruhm (Professor of Public Policy and Economics, University of Virginia). Each paper is allocated an hour, with a 30 minutes presentation by the authors, followed by a short discussion by an allocated discussant and time for a general discussion. Participation and lunch costs will be covered by the organization, but travel expenses must be covered by participants. The workshop is co-sponsored by Obra Social La Caixa, the Centre for Research in Health and Economics of Universitat Pompeu Fabra ( and UNED.

Selection of papers will be based on full drafts submitted to: [log in para visualizar] The deadline to submit papers is 15 May 2015.
Authors will be informed about acceptance around 15th June 2015.
The workshop will take place at UNED in Madrid, 17-18th September 2015.
Authors will have two months after the workshop to submit their articles to the Special Issue using the online platform of Health Economics. The special issue will be published in autumn 2016.
