Visualisation of convective flow patterns in low temperature fluids

This post is funded from a new EPSRC grant awarded to conduct
research in convective flow pattern formation in liquid helium. This
work capitalises on our recent success in pioneering the use of
optical shadowgraphy in a low temperature environment to make such
patterns visible. This technical advance permits quantum fluids to
be used as pattern-forming systems with all their natural advantages
of high resolution thermometry and low Prandtl number. Visualisation
experiments in these fluids should provide new insight on the
interplay between pattern symmetry and system nonlinearity: an area
  currently attracting world-wide attention.

We are looking for an experimental condensed matter physicist with
an interest in fluid mechanics; experience in low temperature
physics and nonlinear dynamics would be an advantage.

This is a three-year position available in October 1997 for an
appointee starting at Point 6 on the Grade 1A salary scale (L16927).
For applicants appointed higher on the scale the period would be
  shorter than three years.

  Informal enquiries to Dr. P.G.J.Lucas (tel. +44(0) 161 275 4073,
  fax +44(0) 161 275 4056, e-mail: [log in para visualizar], www pages
  at http://mphhpc.ph.man.ac.uk:4321/con_matter.html).

  Closing date: October 22 1997.
