The group of Fluid Mechanics at Malaga University (Malaga, Spain) is looking for an enthusiastic research student with a strong interest in fluid dynamics, electro-atomization and aerosol technology. Successful candidates will join a small but very active multidisciplinary team, working in several electrospray (ES)-related problems. Te research will be both experimental and numerical, focused in some aspects of ES. The main topic that will be considered during the research include, but are not limited, to the description of an electrospray of evaporating droplets, and its interaction with other aerosol particles.
Applicants will enroll in the Mecatronica PhD program at Malaga University.
CANDIDATES:
Successful applicants must hold a Master degree in Engineering (at least equivalent to a 5 years course in Engineering) at the time of the application, in the areas of Mechanical, Industrial or Aeronautical Engineering (note that other backgrounds might not be considered). Preference will be given to candidates able to demonstrate the following desired skills:
- Matlab / LabVIEW
- Mechanical engineering design tools such as Inventor, Creo, etc.
- Simulation tools such as COMSOL, OpenFOAM, ANSYS,…
DETAILS AND APPLICATION PROCEDURE:
The call for applications are opened from today, November 19, until November 29.

Project abstract
The present proposal fits in the non-oriented research, since a large part of it is devoted to the
investigation of fundamental aspects of several processes related to electrosprays and
electrospray technology. As described in section 2, and in more detail in section 3.2, a large
part of the proposed research aims at describing the structure of an electrospray consisting of
evaporating droplets, some of them suffering series of Coulomb fissions, where ions are
sometimes field-emitted from the droplet surface, and where charged nano-residues are
formed after complete solvent evaporation from the droplets. Such a complex series of inter-
related processes need to be understood from a fundamental point of view to be afterwards
useful as a particulate filter (continuation of our recent work), but also as a guide to optimize
electrospray-mass spectrometry systems, a world-wide adopted analytical tool.
Finally, the last part of the proposal deals with the still unsolved problem related to the
foundations of the electrospray technology. In this case we shall look at the interaction between
the electrospray plume and the geometry of the Taylor cone emitting such electrospray. This
relationship might shine light on aspects such that the stability island in the (flow rate, voltage)
plane for electrosprays in the cone-jet mode.
