A position as data scientist / programmer is open within the CSIC Ayuda Atracción de Talento research project “Quantifiyng the socio-environmental impacts of food production and consumption”, led by Eduardo Aguilera. The hired person will collaborate with the team of the ERC Starting Grant project WHEP “Who Has Eaten the Planet: the paths of food systems beyond the safe and just operating space (1850-2020)” and with renowned international experts on fields such as Agronomy, Biology (biogeochemistry), Nutrition, or Economic History.

The research project will estimate and analyze the environmental and social impacts of food
production and consumption in the long term and at a global scale. Coherent datasets will be
generated using historical sources and imputation algorithms. The environmental impacts will be modelled in a spatially explicit way, obtaining footprints of the agricultural products that will be traced along global supply chains. The programming environment is R. The code and the datasets will be published Open Access in repositories such as GitHub and Zenodo.

THE PROGRAMMER / DATA SCIENTIST WILL ASSIST IN THE FOLLOWING TASKS:
• Building reproducible and well-documented data processing pipelines
• Developing an automated AI-based workflow for extracting data from historical sources
• Building complete datasets based on historical sources
• Geospatial data processing, including spatial disaggregation of statistical agricultural data and
spatially explicit modelling of biogeochemical processes
• Modelling biophysical flows and environmental footprints of the global food system
• Uncertainty analyses

EVALUATION OF MERITS
• BSc degree in Informatics, Biostatistics, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, or similar, is necessary
• MSc degree and other titles in those fields will be valued
• The following programming experience, particularly in R or Python, will be valued:
o Data analysis, particularly economic, environmental or agricultural data
o Spatial analysis
o Using big data infrastructure
• Fluent English will be valued
• We search for applicants with a high motivation, autonomy, and ability for team work

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE POSITION
• Start in September-October 2024
• The team is based at IEGD, located at CCHS in Madrid (Spain)
• There is a 3-month trial period
• The contract is full-time with a duration of 19 months and the possibility to be extended.
• Full-time represents 37.5 weekly working hours, with flexible organization
• The job offer will be published on the CSIC job bank by early August 2024
• The position category is TITULADO SUPERIOR FC1 (€40,900 full time yearly gross salary)
