The group of Geo- and Astrophysics at Helmholtz-Zentrum
Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) is looking for a PhD Student for the project
"Real-time identification of flow states in the DRESDYN precession
experiment using distributed ultrasound sensors".
The position offers the opportunity to contribute to the DRESDYN
project, which focuses on the generation of magnetic fields through a
liquid metal dynamo experiment driven solely by precession. In
collaboration with the Measurement, Sensor, and Embedded Systems Lab
at TU Bergakademie Freiberg, we aim to develop a new system for
distributed flow measurements in opaque fluids based on Ultrasound
Doppler Velocimetry that will be used for measurements at the
precession dynamo experiment.
The primary responsibility of the PhD student will be the analyses of
the data obtained in the experiment in order to reconstruct the flow
structure and amplitude as well as the analyses of the back-reaction
of the magnetic field on the fluid flow and the correlation with data
from other measurement probes like e.g. power consumption of the
motor, pressure, and magnetic field.
Further tasks involve the integration of the measurement system into
the precession dynamo experiment. This includes conducting tests on
smaller test stations to ensure mechanical stability, robustness
against electrical interference radiation, and proper coupling of the
ultrasonic signal to the fluid.
The position will be available from 1 October 2024. The employment
contract is limited to three years.
