    Paul M. Lloyd cumple sus 70 años en 1999. Paul Lloyd
escribió su monumental libro "From Latin to Spanish, Volume
1: Historical Phonology and Morphology of the Spanish
Language" (Philadelphia, 1987) con un detenimiento, y una
actitud comprensiva, que resultarían más o menos
imposibles en estos días de forzadas publicaciónes
rápidas; pero valió la pena, porque este libro, y su
traducción española ("Del latín al español, I: Fonología y
morfología históricas de la lengua española", Gredos,
Madrid, 1993), figuran entre los mejores que se hayan
escrito sobre el tema. Por esta razón, y otras, un grupo de
los amigos de Paul Lloyd nos decidimos (durante el IV
Congreso Internacional de Historia de la Lengua Española
que se celebró en Logroño en 1997) elaborarle un volumen de
Homenaje. Los editores de este Homenaje (Bob Blake, Diana
Ranson y Roger Wright) todos nos dimos cuenta de lo mucho
que nos ha ayudado Paul Lloyd tanto profesional como
personalmente, pero no sabíamos entonces que casi todos los
otros especialistas anglo-parlantes de la historia de la
lengua espa~nola sienten lo mismo; verdaderamente, todos
los que le conocen le debemos un gran deuda de
agradecimiento. Por esto, no había problema en reunir un
valioso equipo de colaboradores, ni en persuadir a la
editorial "Juan de la Cuesta":

a publicarlo. Hay 16 contribuciones en este volumen;
tres de colegas europeos, una de un español residente en
los EE.UU; y los otros son estadounidenses, en su gran
mayoría o bien alumnos de Yakov Malkiel, o bien alumnos de
alumnos de Yakov Malkiel. Dejamos a los autores la libertad
de tema, dentro de la gran gama de la lingüística
hispánica, pero resulta, naturalmente, que casi todos
tratan de asuntos históricos. La calidad de las
contribuciones resulta (aunque no soy yo el que debiera
decirlo) excelente.

        En el gran congreso de lingüistas de la Universidad
de Kentucky, el viernes 23 de abril, los editores le
presentamos este libro de homenaje al homenajeado. Trece de
los autores estaban allí, más Thomas Lathrop (el jefe de la
editorial "Juan de la Cuesta"). Era una ocasión más bien
emocionante, porque parece (aunque sea difícil creerlo) que
Paul Lloyd no sabía de antemano lo que iba a pasar. Ahora
el libro está en venta, y todas las bibliotecas debieran
obtener un ejemplar, sobre todo porque el precio es muy
modesto. Y además, os lo recomendamos.
