The post The position is to be commenced on or after 1 November 2003 at a date to be mutually agreed. The salary scale for a Research Assistant 1A, is under review, but at present is in the range £18265-£27339. The starting point for this post depends on qualifications and experience. A Ph.D. in engineering or experimental physics, or equivalent experience is required, with excellent experimental skills in fluid mechanics and/or soft condensed matter. Duties The Research Assistant will assist in expanding the activities of the Fluids Laboratory in the School of Mathematics in the areas of fluid instabilities, granular flow, and grain-flow interactions. Research Assistants are expected to enhance their own research capabilities and to participate in appropriate Departmental activities. The Applied Mathematics and Numerical Analysis Group The successful applicant will join the Applied Mathematics and Numerical Analysis Group in the School of Mathematics, which has about 20 academic staff and a similar number of research students in the fields of fluid dynamics, nonlinear mathematics and mathematical physics. It gained a rating of 5*A in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise. One of the Department's computer officers has a primary responsibility to assist research.
