Nunca mejor, vuestro turno: > *** > We have been informed that the Department of Information Science is to be closed with the retirement of the chair holder Wolfgang G. Stock. The alleged reason for the closure is the need to economize and cut a professor’s positions at the level of the Philosophical Faculty (12 institutes, 25 degree programs, 10,000 students) of the Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf. > > The decision to cut this position in information science is supposedly due to the upcoming retirement of the chair holder in 2019. Unlike at other institutes in the Philosophical Faculty, the cut in information science would entail the closure of the whole department, affecting four degree programs, more than 10 university lecturers and almost 1,000 students, as Prof. Stock is the only full information science professor at the University of Düsseldorf. > > The dean announced this week that the decision regarding the closure will be made in the next faculty council meeting on Tuesday, 26 January. > > We would like to ask for your support to prevent this closure by writing a support letter to the university president (Rektorin) and the dean (Dekan) of the Philosophical Faculty of the Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf. We would suggest that this letter included your personal opinion regarding the importance of the Department of Information Science at the University of Düsseldorf and why you consider it crucial that the closing is prevented. Please feel free use the following background information as arguments in your letter: > > > * The Department of Information Science at the University of Düsseldorf is one of the most productive information science institutes in Europe, as reflected in its annual output of 20-30 peer-reviewed publications. > * The closure of the department would mean the discontinuation of highly-qualified university education for the internet economy. This has a direct effect on the quality of future workforce in the sector, who would no longer be equipped with the specialized knowledge and skills needed by the information economy in the Düsseldorf region, Germany and abroad. > * Besides the internet economy, various other sectors and lines of business benefit from the interdisciplinary knowledge of alumni of the Department of Information Science. Particularly, university and research libraries show great interest in students who benefited from the education at the department. > * The department at the University of Düsseldorf is the only information science department at a university in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), which with a population of 11 million is Germany’s most populous state. Comparable degrees can only be obtained at three other universities in Germany: Hildesheim, Regensburg and Berlin. It should be noted that each of these departments has its specific focus in research and teaching, so that the closure of Düsseldorf would mean the loss of a specialized area of information science research and education in Germany. > * The further development of the information society represents an essential part of current political programs in the state of NRW, as well as on the German federal level. Closing the only degree program at a university in NRW that is explicitly devoted to educating and training highly qualified workforce for the information society contradicts these political goals. > * The Department of Information Science in Düsseldorf offers four degree programs, which currently train almost 1,000 students. The department has produced excellent alumni, who have taken up successful careers in private enterprises as well as public organizations. > * The Department of Information Science at the Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf plays an essential part in the education of young academics. Düsseldorf Alumni have become information science professors and researchers in Germany and abroad. > * The intended closure goes against international trends, where information science institutes and degree programs are supported and expanded. > > Information Science education and research in Düsseldorf are a success story, which should not be ended purely due to economization efforts. The Department of Information Science at the Heinrich Heine University should rather be strengthened. > > We would kindly ask you to send your letter of support before the crucial faculty council meeting on Tuesday, 26 January 2016, independently to both the dean (Dekan) and the university president (Rektorin): > > > * Dekan der Philosophischen Fakultät > Prof. Dr. Ulrich Rosar > Gebäude 24.51 > Universitätsstraße 1 > D-40225 Düsseldorf > Germany > Email: [log in para visualizar]<mailto:[log in para visualizar]> > > > * Rektorin der Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf > Prof. Dr. Anja Steinbeck > Gebäude 16.11 > Universitätsstraße 1 > D-40225 Düsseldorf > Germany > Email: [log in para visualizar]<mailto:[log in para visualizar]> > > We are sincerely grateful for your support and efforts to avoid the closure of the department! > Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions ([log in para visualizar]) and to forward this information to interested colleagues! > > With kind regards, > > Prof. Dr. Dirk Lewandowski (Hamburg University of Applied Sciences) > Prof. Dr. Isabella Peters (ZBW Leibniz Information Center for Economics) > Dr. Jasmin Schmitz (ZB MED Leibniz Information Centre for Life Sciences) > Dr. Violeta Trkulja (Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin) > Dr. Katrin Weller (GESIS Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences) > > *** > > > Email address of the university president: > [log in para visualizar] > > Email address of the dean of the Philosophical Faculty: > [log in para visualizar] > > Email addresses of faculty council members: > [log in para visualizar] > [log in para visualizar] > [log in para visualizar] > [log in para visualizar] > [log in para visualizar] > [log in para visualizar] > [log in para visualizar] > [log in para visualizar] > [log in para visualizar] > [log in para visualizar] > [log in para visualizar] > [log in para visualizar] > [log in para visualizar] > [log in para visualizar] > [log in para visualizar] > [log in para visualizar] > [log in para visualizar] > [log in para visualizar] > [log in para visualizar] > [log in para visualizar] > [log in para visualizar] > [log in para visualizar] > [log in para visualizar] > [log in para visualizar] > [log in para visualizar] > [log in para visualizar] > [log in para visualizar] > [log in para visualizar] > [log in para visualizar] > [log in para visualizar] > > ____________________________________________________________________________________ > Dr. Stefanie Haustein > > Postdoctoral Researcher > Canada Research Chair on the Transformations of Scholarly Communication > École de bibliothéconomie et des sciences de l’information (EBSI) > Université de Montréal > > e-mail: [log in para visualizar] > web: http://crc.ebsi.umontreal.ca > Twitter: @stefhaustein > ________________________________ -- ************************************************************** Isidro F.
