DESCRIPTION:

 

The Department of Mathematics & Statistics at the University of Limerick is seeking to appoint a Lecturer (tenured) or a Lecturer below the bar (tenure-track) in mathematics. The department has a thriving research programme in applied mathematics and statistics and it is responsible for teaching mathematics and statistics at all levels across the University.

 

The Mathematics Applications Consortium for Science and Industry (MACSI) is the department’s research centre that applies mathematics and statistics to diverse real-world problems. MACSI also works collaboratively within UL and with academic and industry partners, having principal investigators in national Science Foundation Ireland Research Centres (e.g., the Insight Centre for Data Analytics, the Confirm Centre for Smart Manufacturing, the Synthesis and Solid-State Pharmaceutical Centre (SSPC)) and with links to UL’s Health Research Institute and Bernal Institute. The department also hosts (in collaboration with University College Dublin and Maynooth University) the Science Foundation Ireland Centre for Research Training in Foundations of Data Science, which is training over 120 PhD students in the foundational disciplines of applied mathematics, statistics and machine learning.

 

Applicants are invited from any area of mathematics including, but not limited to mathematical modelling, financial mathematics, industrial mathematics, fluid mechanics, network science, differential equations, numerical analysis, inverse problems and optimisation. The successful candidate will have a doctoral degree (level 10 NFQ) in a relevant discipline, a track record of excellent research and should demonstrate a commitment to teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Experience of working in collaborative and interdisciplinary projects is also desirable, as is an awareness of how their work can impact more broadly on industry and society, and an ability to demonstrate this.

 

In December 2015 the department was successful in obtaining an Athena SWAN Bronze award, one of the first departmental awards given in the country, which demonstrates its commitment to addressing gender equality. This award was recently renewed for a second term and we are currently working towards a silver award.

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES:

 

The successful candidate will be required to contribute to the delivery and organisation of teaching their subject within the Department of Mathematics & Statistics, both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and to develop a research programme which complements existing research themes within the Department.

 

KEY TASKS

 

• Development of research and scholarly activities in areas that enhance or complement the Department’s existing research areas. 
• Development of research proposals for submission to external funding bodies, such as Science Foundation Ireland (SFI), the European Union, Irish Research Council, Health Research Board, Enterprise Ireland, etc.
• Supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate research projects.
• Responsibility for lecture preparation and delivery, curriculum development, setting, moderation and marking of examinations and assessment at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels within the Department.  
• Development and delivery of new modules and programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate level that are responsive to the needs of stakeholders. 
• Management and administrative responsibilities in support of the academic activities of the Department.
• Other relevant duties commensurate with the grade of the post as may be assigned by the Head of the Department. 

 

Essential Criteria: Lecturer below the bar

 

• Primary degree in mathematical sciences, or a related area.
• Doctoral degree (level 10 NFQ) in mathematics or a closely related area.
• Minimum of 2 years’ relevant experience post-PhD.
• A developing record of independent research.
• A developing relevant publication record in the field of mathematics.
• Evidence of relevant teaching experience or scientific communication experience.

 

Essential Criteria: Lecturer level (in addition to the above)

 

• Minimum of 4 years’ relevant experience post-PhD.
• An established record of independent research.
• An established relevant publication record in the field of mathematics.

 

Desirable Criteria: Lecturer below the bar level

 

• Evidence of a developing research network within the international research community that enhances or complements the Department’s existing research areas.
• Evidence of ability to supervise postgraduate students to PhD level.
• Demonstrated ability to teach relevant mathematics courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
• Evidence of impact on society/industry and contribution to discipline.

 

Desirable Criteria: Lecturer level

 

• Evidence of an established research network within the international research community that enhances or complements the Department’s existing research areas.
• Experience in the preparation of research proposals for submission to external funding bodies.
• History of supervision of postgraduate students.
• Evidence of relevant experience in third-level teaching and learning.
• Evidence of academic course/module material development and delivery in a third-level setting. 

 

Applications must include: 

• A research plan (up to two pages in length) describing the research that the candidate would envisage undertaking if offered the position at the University of Limerick,

and

• A teaching plan (up to two pages in length) detailing how the candidate would contribute to teaching and learning in the department if offered the position.

 

These plans should include the applicant’s proposals to advance programme offerings and research activities within the Department and across the University.
