The Institute for Chemistry and Biology of the Marine Environment (ICBM) at the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg (Group Theoretical Physics/Complex Systems) invites applications for a

postdoc position (m/f/d)

Connectivity between the islands in different archipelagos worldwide

salary according to E13 TV-L, 100%

starting from 1.10.2022 (for three years)

The position is suitable for part-time work.

Application deadline: 1 September 2022

The ICBM is an interdisciplinary research institute, for fundamental and applied marine research. The internationally renowned institute aims at understanding the function of marine environmental systems through close cooperation of the various scientific disciplines (chemistry, biology, physics, mathematical modelling) of its more than 20 research groups.

The group Theoretical Physics/Complex Systems works on the application of methods from nonlinear dynamics in environmental science, such as the interplay between biological processes and hydrodynamic flows. The topic of this postdoc position is related to a collaborative project funded by the German Science Foundation “Spatial community ecology in highly dynamic landscapes: from island biogeography to metaecosystems”. The main objective is to provide the basics of passive transport of particles due to oceanic and atmospheric flows for other groups working in ecological modeling and data analysis, Therefore the work is highly interdisciplinary.

Your tasks: Maps estimating the transport of particles (tracers and inertial particles) by hydrodynamic flows (ocean and atmospheric) between different locations on the globe shall be created and compared to plant and bird species distributions in the world. This involves designing efficient computer programs for numerical particle tracking in large scale flows with applications to passive transport of plant seeds, active transport of plant seeds by birds along bird flying routes worldwide with a special emphasis on different island archipelagos. The comparison with data from macroecology will be done in close collaboration with scientists from the TU Munich and the University Göttingen.

Requirements: Qualifying academic university degree (Master or diploma (not of a University of Applied Sciences)) and a PhD degree in Physics, Meteorology, Oceanography, Atmospheric Science, Environmental Sciences, Mathematics, with good grades. A strong background in physics, particularly hydrodynamics and extended experience in computer programming with Matlab, Python, Julia or other higher programming languages is expected. Knowledge in multivariate data analysis in space and time is desirable. Applicants should be open for interdisciplinary collaborations with biologists and ecologists.

The University of Oldenburg is dedicated to increasing the percentage of female employees in the field of science. Therefore, female candidates are strongly encouraged to apply. In accordance with Lower Saxony regulations (§ 21 Section 3 NHG) female candidates with equal qualifications will be preferentially considered. Applicants with disabilities will be given preference in case of equal qualification.

Applications, including a cover letter, curriculum vitae, qualifying documents (final academic records), a research statement (maximum 1 page) and the names and contact information of up to two references should be submitted by email in a single PDF to Prof. Dr. Ulrike Feudel ([log in para visualizar]) using subject "Particle Dynamics" by 01.09.2022. Interested candidates are encouraged to contact Prof. Dr. Ulrike Feudel ([log in para visualizar]) for more information about the position.
